ARCHITECTURE GAMES – PART 3

A continuation of Architecture Games Part 1 and Architecture Games Part 2 . . . .

1. Monument Valley

Monument valley is a game of illusion where the main game character names Ida has to be guided to reach the door to finish every level. There are 3 apps for the very same game as each app has only limited number of levels. The Monument valley has only 19 levels in total. Monument valley 2 and 3 almost has the same number of levels. I have tried both Monument Valley 1 and 2 and only 2 levels in Monument Valley 3. In the 1st, there’s only one main character. In the 2nd, the player gets to play two characters – one as a parent and other as a kid. That was interesting to navigate together and then separately only to meet again at some point.

Anyone can play this game. Still I would like to add the brighter side of it for all players, especially the Architects. This up-skills you in terms of spatial awareness, understanding perspective through illusions, way finding through complex visual forms by observation of geometric relationships.

Availability: Android and iOS

2. Build Up!!

This is exactly like our matchstick models in initial Architecture and Design courses. The easiest and simplest way to learn structures and stability and balancing. The game begins with a stable triangular shape. From there on we have to tap on screen to make more stable joints to reach the top. As the levels go higher, the player has to make a higher stable structure.

Bonus Up-skills – understanding the stable structures, strength of a triangular form, structural thought process, problem solving.

3. I love Hue too

I love this game especially to play at night rather than doomscrolling without sleep. The soothing light music and the colors doesn’t hyper stimulate and keeps me calm. Also it could improve our color spectrum I guess. The player has only to arrange each color piece in the exact arrangement as in gradient and harmonious spectrum of colors.

Bonus Up-skills – understanding gradients and color transitions, color perception, increase in visual color sensitivity, composition and form changes visually based on the colors

4. Mekorama

In this game, the player is shown as a tiny robot. Each level looks like a unique architectural prototypes where the player has to navigate and it’s all about way finding. It’s similar to Monument Valley in terms of finding the right path to reach the goal. But there’s no illusion involved here, it’s pure geometry. It reminds me of architecture model making days. This game isn’t available in UAE but it’s available in India.

Bonus Up-skills – understanding spatial relationships and creates spatial awareness, reasoning, aspects to circulation

Availability: Android and iOS

5. Bridge Constructor

This game is entirely based on basics of structural engineering. I wish I played this in my college days. Again this game involves more of the stable form of triangulation to build bridges in the game. The player will be provided with a limited resource to build bridges and then test vehicle runs over it. Students learning the foundations of structural engineering and design would certainly benefit from playing this game. Only limitation is that this game also has limited number of levels.

Bonus Up-skills – understanding structural basics, load transfer and triangulation
