Rem Koolhas

Rem Koolhas is an epic, I would say. His unconventional approach to his projects and rooting for his visions are extraordinary. Koolhas is a complex mind, I think. His buildings say the complexity loud enough to be noticed.

For the CCTV building in China, he came with a challenging superstructure.

How could an extraordinary mind settle with anything lesser? May be cause he sees more in less.

Does that also sound complex? Let me simplify.

Will you be creative on a blank canvas or a canvas already done with an amazing piece?

Obviously it’s the blank canvas. Likewise Rem Koolhas sees a huge possibility of creativity in a blank space with nothing in it.

The best example for his quote would be the Seattle Library.

This is not the regular kind of rigid library with aisles of book shelves through out. This is an exceptional with a flexible open plan housing 780,000 books with future expansion to accommodate 1,450,000 books in a 11 storey building where the top most level 10 offers the quite reading space and the urban city view. The first level is for children and other event spaces. The third level is the much required public urban space for Seattle people with cafe and shops.

The major highlight is the central book spiral.

It’s a continuous ramp of 4 levels with 2 degree slope offering the readers to have a clear view of every category and books possibly in a way each category can scale up in future too.

Truly such an iconic architectural piece stands out and invites in many visitors and readers. Yet, one can’t deny the unconventional plan and its complexity causing the complexities in navigating around the library.
